If I am lactose intolerant, is there an alternative to lactulose for SIBO testing?Updated 7 months ago
The amount of lactulose required for a SIBO test is 15ml. This is only a small amount of lactulose so is generally not a problem for those who are lactose intolerant. Most people who do not have lactase persistence can still break down about half a cup of dairy per day - there is a lot less lactose in the lactulose sachet.
If you are at all concerned about using lactulose, then you can use glucose (also known as dextrose) as an alternative (75g in 240ml of water).
Glucose is available from most chemists/pharmacies/drug stores.
